El descubrimiento fue hecho hace muy poco, pueden leer en el blog Cosmic Variance una explicación bien coherente, pero en inglés, trataré de escribir algo mas en español cuando tenga tiempo, por ahora me pareció importante como para dejarlo pasar.

You could pick up the old lady, because she is going to die, and thus you should save her first; or you could take the old friend because he once saved your life, and this would be the perfect chance to pay him back. However, you may never be able to find your perfect dream lover again.
The candidate who was hired (out of 200 applicants) had no trouble
coming up with his answer.
He simply answered: “I would give the car keys to my old friend, and let him take the lady to the hospital. I would stay behind and wait for the bus with the woman of my dreams.”

La pareja de Rebecca Sparks y David Abrahamson del Rhode Island College desarrollaron una fórmula matemática para determinar el ganador del premio Cy Young este año, y declararon a Chris Carpenter de los Cardenales de St. Louis y al panameño Mariano Rivera de los Yankees de New York como los ganadores… matemáticamente hablando.
El premio Cy Young se otorga anualmente a los mejores lanzadores del Baseball de las grandes ligas durante la temporada regular. Este premio generalmente lo ganan los lanzadores abridores, pero la fórmula indica que por la falta de alguna buena figura este año en la liga americana, el ganador será Mariano Rivera, quien es cerrador para los yankees.
Bueno, de todas maneras los ganadores oficiales serán anunciados el jueves.
BTW, si alguien está interezado en analizar el modelo creado para determinar los ganadores, éste será presentado para discusión el 18-19 de Noviembre en la Universidad de New Hampshire en la reunión regional de la MAA.

Chuck Berta profesor de Microbiología de la Universidad de Arizona ha llevado a cabo mediciones dentro de los cuartos de hospital para determinar objetos o superficies que contengan la mayor cantidad de bacterías. El estudio se llevo a cabo comparando el piso del baño, donde se cuelga la toalla, los botones de marcado del telefono, la manija de abrir la puerta y el control remoto de la televisión.
El promedio encontrado en la mayoría de estas areas fue de 91, sin embargo el control remoto tiene un promedio de 320. Aún mas alarmante es la precencia de una bacteria conocida como " Methicillin-Resistent Staphylococcus Aureus" (MRSA), la cual es resistente a los antibióticos y es la mayor causa de infecciones y muertes por enfermedades adquiridas por los pacientes en el hospital.
De acuerdo al "New England Journal of Medicine" las infecciones adquiridas por los pacientes en el hospital ascienden a 2millones, matando cerca de 900,000 personas todos los años.
